So, the holy grail is:
(a) to be able to send an email and create a new thread,
(b) to be sent an email when someone replies to a thread,
(c) to be able to reply to THAT email and thereby create a new posting in the same thread,
(d) to receive an email when anyone posts to a new or existing thread in a forum I am interested in.
With Gretchen's help, I have achieved (a).
Issue #1: The thread is created in the 'Mondrian Mailing List' forum. Could it be created in the 'Mondrian [Pentaho Analysis Services]' forum?
I have not yet also achieved (b). Or maybe my email is sluggish right now.
Issue #2: Gretchen, do you expect that (b) and (c) will work?
Issue #3. To be best of my knowledge, vBulletin doesn't support (d).

Hey Julian!
I’ve got lots of good news regarding the email functionality in vBulletin.
I will summarize it here for you, post it as a reply to your thread in the support forums , then when I get a confirmation from you that you like the implementation of the mailing list, I will add that communication to the FAQ as well as send out a notice through mondrian-user and mondrian-devel about the mailing list move.
So, the holy grail is:
(a) to be able to send an email and create a new thread,
We know that this works.
(b) to be sent an email when someone replies to a thread,
Whether a user replies via email to the mailing-list or replies as a post in the forum, you will get an email if YOU are a subscriber on the list AND the replier is a subscriber on the list (I just got this working this AM). If the replier is not subscribed, the post/email gets sent to the moderator (that would be you Julian). NOTE that the vBulletin plugin runs the mailing list push-pull job every ten minutes, so there will be a slight delay in replies through the forum.
(c) to be able to reply to THAT email and thereby create a new posting in the same thread,
Unfortunately, I have not been able to get this to work. When replying to a post through email, the reply comes in as a new thread. It’s not supposed to work this way, so I will keep looking at it to see if there is something I can tweak, but as it stands, the threads hierarchy is not preserved through email posts.
(d) to receive an email when anyone posts to a new or existing thread in a forum I am interested in.
Julian, (d) of course, is regarding our other forums, not the mailing list forum. I CAN specify a list of users (manually administered) that receive an email on every post at the forum level, through the administrator’s interface. I intend to set this up so that all moderators are on these lists of the forums they are responsible for. While this won’t be an option for your entire community, it is certainly available to you and the moderators you choose.

Issue #1: The thread is created in the 'Mondrian Mailing List' forum. Could it be created in the 'Mondrian [Pentaho Analysis Services]' forum?
No. The mailing list forum requires that everyone subscribe or be moderated to post in that type of forum. I don’t think you want to do that to your whole community, or yourself.
I have not yet also achieved (b). Or maybe my email is sluggish right now.
See response above.
Issue #2: Gretchen, do you expect that (b) and (c) will work?
See response above.
Issue #3. To be best of my knowledge, vBulletin doesn't support (d).
It does. See response above.
