    Question Help with Pentaho reporting

    Hi,
I recently downloaded Pentaho and I am trying to self-teach myself the software. I just configured a data source using the Pentaho web UI. I now have a couple of really basic questions about Pentaho reporting. Please bear with me if these questions have been already asked. I searched the forum but did not find anything similar, so decided to post. My questions are:

I have a couple of reports which the user should be able to access. Is is possible to create parameterized inputs for the reports? Based on the inputs the reports should be pulled from the db. Also, the user should be able to see the different reports when he logs in and when he clicks on a link to a report, he should be taken to the page where he can enter the inputs.

I tried using the Pentaho report designer and under data->Add parameters, I added the parameter based on which the report should be generated. When I clicked 'Run', then a pop-up box opened with a textbox to enter the parameter. Is is possible for the inputs to be displayed inline rather than as a popup?

Once again, I apologize if these questions have been already asked. Would be great if anyone can help me out here.

If you publish your report, the report's defined parameter will be displayed in the tabbed user interface. Just start any of the sample reports that already ship with the platform to see how the BI-Server presents parameter.

Given the fact that you already defined parameter, I think you already answered the question on whether you could parametrize inputs

The report-designer itself is not meant to be a multi-user tool. So when you click run, there is no "inline" context to start with. As the report designer is a fat-client application, all we can do is to open a dialog to allow you to enter the parameter values before you run the report. However, most of our users publish reports to a server to share them with all users of that server.

As you start out with the product, have a look at the official documentation in the info center and the tutorial videos of our pre-sales portal.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have another question. Can this be a web interface? Will I be able to write simple HTML for the inputs and is it possible to have multiple reports as links on a page and when the user clicks on it, he is taken to the corresponding reports?

    Hi Bhairavi,

Yes you can do that, but you need to read more on Pentaho Report Designer. Also, pentaho user console is the web interface you are looking for, please read more from infocenter, it has all the information you need actually.
    Regards,
    Madhu
