We are evaluating Pentaho to be considered for some business intelligence and information integration projects we work on in the SME. As usual this kind of projects start from the reporting system and then move forward...

As we can see Pentaho has taken some already available open source projects and has put all them together in an integrated environment.

Talking about the reporting system they have some different tools doing similar things.

So my question is: what are the differences amongst them? what reporting tool should we start using? What will be pushed by Pentaho? how to be sure not to take the bad branch?

We like the Pentaho project but we must start with a strategic decision.

We need:
- a desktop reporting design tool for the casual user
- a more sophisticated design tool for the programmer
- a way to deliver the reports asking dynamic parameter to the report user

Thanks.

Ant.

Hi,

Currently pentaho supporting 3 open source reporting tools Eclipe BIRT, JasperReport, JFree Reports. All these reporting tools have there prons and cons. Like BIRT is currently developed by Actuate and as per it's project plan for V2 it sounds gr8 for new fetures and this is expecting to relese 20 JAN 2006. So if you would looking for future then BIRT is one good choice.
