Your question is very general - there are several ways to access data and manipulate it in the platform.

The simplest and most apparent methods of accessing external data are:

using a datasource in a report creating a datasource as part of an action sequence

Instructions for both of these tasks are described in our Creating Pentaho Solutions Guide, available from http://www.pentaho.org/downloads/doc.

You can also see samples of reports using our SampleData database and samples of the different datasources that are supported in our pre-configured install demo, which you can find at http://www.pentaho.org/downloads/platform.

Once you have gone through the documentation and studied the samples, you should get the hang of it. If at that time you have more specific questions about using datasources in the platform, we would be happy to help!

best regards,
Gretchen

Jasper and BIRT are two component reporting engines that we have integrated into the platform, but they remain independent open source projects, thus the documentation can be found on the web site for that project.

The following URL is the web site for the Eclipse BIRT project. As of Jan 06, we use version 1.0.1RC1 in Pentaho BI Platform 1.0. You can find documentation on how to write BIRT reports there:

http://www.eclipse.org/birt/

The following URL is the web site for the Jasper project:

http://jasperreports.sourceforge.net/
