I noticed that sometimes, the spoon closes without warning or error. Sometimes, I placed 4 to 10 steps and then it closes. It is really irritating because you havent save your work yet. Sometimes, spoon is reliable. I really do not understand the reason behind this.

Does anybody know the reason and the solution for this?

I am using Windows XP Home / Windows 2000.

Sorry to hear that anonymous,

Please do file a bug report for it.

>I am using Windows XP Home / Windows 2000.

Most people on this planet do, but please understand that this is not very helpful.

If you could be so kind to include a bit more details on the version of Spoon and the version of the Java Virtual Machine used.
(run java -version on a CMD prompt)

And really, a stack trace would be nice as well.

To capture the stack trace, edit the Spoon.bat file and switch the REMs in the last 2 lines.
(e.g. use the java line instead of the kettlew line, this gives you a console)
Place a "pause" command after the last lines so that when you do get a stack trace it remains on the screen.

With this information, we should be able to help you out almost instantly.

Thanks in advance for the feedback,

Matt

Java Version = 1.5.0_06
Java Runtime Environment , Standard Edition ( build 1.5.0_06-b05)

Spoon Version = 2.2.2

I will post later the stack trace.

Thank you for reminding me. Sometimes I forget details...

Not at all. Other open-source projects typically put up fairly large bariers by asking a whole list of details up front. I deliberately choose NOT to do this because to allow even minor anoyances to be captured.
So you see, I don't remind people to send all this information on purpose. ;-)

Again many thanks. If you can reproduce the bug and the stack trace, that would be really great! People all work in different ways and it's sometimes a certain combination of handlings that triggers a certain bug. This is very hard to detect so an exception trace REALLY would be welcome ;-)

Have you figured out the problem? This is still happening. Although this is not so critical, the problem is quite irritating. Perhaps we can add a auto save feature.

I noticed that it happens when I drag the icons. Maybe it gets too confused or my system is slow?

Someone reported crashes of Spoon on OSX as well. Personally I never have any problems anymore these days, but that's because I can fix any problem I have immediately ;-)

So, because of the OSX problem, I implemented another Drag And Drop mechanism for Spoon, transporting data over XML (UTF-8 String). The code is available in the latest drop of kettle.jar in Documentation / Development Packages.

Don't hesitate to post a stack trace yourself.

Thanks!

Matt
