View Full Version : Some newbie pentaho doubts!

09-06-2007, 08:32 AM

I have been trying to use pentaho in my job to integrate several databases, generating reports, etc.

I have put the pre configurated version on and so far checked the demos, even though im kind of lost using it.

My first question is: Can i use the pre-configurated version for my application, since its easy to install, or is the normal version which i have to deploy, recommended?

My second question is: I have to use pentaho with my own databases, but sadly i have no clue on how to do that. Can someone recommend some reading material that i can use to learn about that? I know everythin is around here, near, but there are so many things that i dont know what i use to begin, or what to read.

Thanks everyone!

The Preconfigured Install (or PCI as we call it) is often a good place/configuration to begin your project with. You can begin working with the PCI, configure it to work with your database(s), and modify the PCI to suit your business's needs. The PCI comes set up to use the JBoss App. server, so if you need to use a different app. server, you will have a bit of work to do to deploy the BI platform in your app server.

Keep in mind that Pentaho supports/develops multiple products. The PCI is an implementation of the Pentaho Business Intelligence platform. We also support/develop Kettle (an ETL tool), Mondrian (OLAP server), and other tools. See http://www.pentaho.com/products/ to learn more about Pentaho's products.

For information about configuring the platform to talk to your databases, see: http://wiki.pentaho.org/display/PentahoDoc/Configuring+JNDI+Datasources+for+use+in+the+Pentaho+BI+Platform

For information about getting started with the Pentaho BI platform, take a look at:

In general, many good articles on using Pentaho's tools are available at:

Hello guys,

I installed Pentaho on Windows and now I am thinking about install it on Linux.

What is the best Linux to work with Pentaho? Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, Debian?

Where can I found a step by step of how to install the Pentaho BI Suite on Linux?

Tks a lot,

Use any distribution you want, it will work.

All the methods described in all the tutorials available (check the pentaho wiki) are more or less OS independent, so follow the one you like the best.

Good luck
