View Full Version : Need to prototype

Good morning everyone,

I'm new in the BI world and my compagny needs to do a simple prototype for a partner.
As I am as an open source developper I thought pentaho would be fine, it seems to be a very complete project !

I just wanted to know if pentaho reporting part can do the following :
If I design a report that takes let's say 10 different parameters.
In these 10 parameters, half of them are lists we extract from the database the other half are just a text field the user needs to fill.

- Will the report create the web front page selection before the report creation ?
- And will this front page be added in the WAR I deployed on my application server ?

Where do I start to have this :
From the pentaho_j2ee_deployments ear ?
From the mondrian embedded war ?
From the mondrian.Jpivot part ?I'm quite lost with all the differents downloads, I red the :

but I couldn't find my way correctly...

Any help would be appreciated, because we will have to offer our clients a full BI solution (from ETL to reports) and I would really like to make the open source business model to progress...

If you're just getting started with Pentaho, I recommend downloading the demo, also known as the Pre-Configured Install (PCI). There are presently two flavors of PCI: a HSQLDB-based build and a MySQL-based build. The HSQLDB-based PCI download (i.e. pentaho_demo_hsqldb-1.6.0.GA.863.zip) is as easy as it gets: unzip and run. And concerning prompting users for report parameters, check out the prompting wiki page (http://wiki.pentaho.org/display/PentahoDoc/Secure+Filter+%28Prompting%29).

Thanx for the link,

I started a solution using the pentaho_j2ee_deployments ear into JBoss Portal and a MySql DB everything works fine.

In order to start a development from scratch, is there any kind of "virgin portal" or do we mandatory have to adapt the pentaho_j2ee_deployments ear and the pentaho-solutions ?

To create a simple portal is there any other steps than these :
- Create an empty DB structure (Quartz, Hibernate, Shark)
- Modify the datasources
- Adapt the ear's pentaho-webapp content
- Create an admin user into database ?
- ???

Is that all before starting creating reports and dashboards ?

OK I just found this link :

I'll go through it :)

Thanks again
