Hey all,
So - I've run into the 'buzzword' problem of "we need data mining", but naturally without any defined reason to use data mining.

Before I get ahead of myself, I'm wondering if there are any good samples (as in use-cases with data and code) that demonstrate where Weka/Data Mining solves a problem better than normal reporting for a business usecase.

thanks in advance, I know it's a tall order but hard to justify the learning curve if you don't know what the return will be ;-)

Hi,

Data mining/knowledge discovery helps reveal patterns in your data that you didn't know or suspect were there, as opposed to OLAP where you basically have a hypothesis and you use slice and dice to confirm or reject it.

As you suspected, finding successful case studies is difficult, simply due to the potential strategic benefit of data mining results. However, it is pretty well known that data mining has been successfully applied for customer segmentation/profiling, targeted-marketing, market basket analysis, fraud detection, and various health applications. Take a look at:

http://ibmdatabasemag.com/db_area/archives/1997/q1/9701edel.shtml

A relatively old article, but quite a concise overview of DM and applications.

Here is a presentation on using clustering for customer segmentation in a real-world example (not using Weka unfortunately, but similar algorithms are available in Weka):

The book that was written to accompany the Weka software also has some discussion of successful fielded applications in chapter 1:

Hope this helps somewhat.

Cheers,
Mark.
