I've seen a few posts on this here, but I'm still a bit lost. I'm trying to do a basic installation and I'd LIKE to go through the demo as well. I find the whole installation process confounding. I'm not sure which version to download or what the actual product is even called. It appears that the BI Suite contains ALL of the different BI tools? Reporting, Dashboards, Data Mining, etc.? The wiki points to file downloads for 1.6, but it seems that there are new files in sourceforget. The 1.7 doesn't appear to have a win .exe file for installation? Or am I just missing it? Is there a single place we can go to for this installation and a thorough piece of documentation that walks one through installation? I'm utterly confused.

Hi DebbieKat

it can be rather confusing. To get started you need to download and install the windows exe for version 1.6 from sourceforge, 1.7 is testing and has not been documented properly.

Once you've got that you can install it, you may need a Mysql installation, you may not, I've never used the windows version. To be honest you shouldn't. Once installed you can start it with the start script and if you navigate to http://localhost:8080/pentaho you should see the nice login screen.

After that you will have the main features installed, you have access to reporting features, the Adhoc reporter, Dashboarding ability and more, but the important thing you don't have is the tools to create the report designs, for this you will need the Report Designer for basic report designing, Cube Designer if you plan to use MDX cubes, Kettle for data extraction and tranformation and lastly the eclipse plugin for editing the xactions with ease.

Hope thats enough to get you started.

Tom

For just checking out the demo and to see what it can do it is fine to download version 1.7... the file name to download is pentaho_demo_hsqldb_1.7.0.M1.1018.zip (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pentaho/pentaho_demo_hsqldb_1.7.0.M1.1018.zip?modtime=1206028709&big_mirror=0).
You don't need an installer of any kind. All you have to do is unzip the file to any location you like, that's it. In the unzipped folder you then find scripts for starting and stopping the BI server which you then can access by pointing your web-browser to http://localhost:8080.

Cheers,

Ideally, I'd like to do both (install it AND see the demo). I have just downloaded the complete set of 1.6 plus the report designer and report designer wizard files. I just wish that there was some basic installation instructions that describes which products you need as the naming of the products on the boards and the sourceforge files don't seem to match up entirely.

For evaluation purposes, there is now a Reporting Evaluation package that bundles the platform with the report designer and metadata editor. From the main pentaho.com page, click on the Reporting Demo button in the main panel. There are Windows and Linux installers available.

http://wiki.pentaho.org/display/PentahoDoc/Getting+Started+with+the+BI+Platform
is probably the best place to start. I'll try and get it updated a bit to make things a little clearer.
