View Full Version : Community Gathering 2009

04-09-2009, 04:03 AM
I sent out a quick email to some of the various community members yesterday regarding their thoughts for a Pentaho Europe Community Gathering somewhere later this summer.

The general consensus was that it was a good idea... so I'm now on the hunt for peoples ideas about location, last years meet was in Mainz, Germany, so personally I think it should be somewhere else, different town, different country(as long as its not the UK, this is my excuse for a holiday).

So far Cologne has been suggested(yes I know its Germany, I'm just passing along the ideas) along with Amsterdam or Brussels, but as this is a European event there are obviously plenty of other potential venues. The general rules being, somewhere commutable from an international airport, somewhere where we can find a venue to do some talks/presentations(Uni, hotel function room etc), and of course somewhere with a decent amount of beer.

04-09-2009, 04:53 AM
Uni, Airport, Central spot and beer? You must be talking of Dublin.

04-09-2009, 04:57 AM
And with Leeds airport about 5 minutes from my house... where better? ;)

04-09-2009, 07:21 AM
My vote is Barcelona

04-09-2009, 07:21 AM
London!!! :)

Or Milan perhaps? ;p)

I'm in anyway... can you remember to book some sunny weather too....

I'll second Barcelona tho!

04-09-2009, 11:08 AM
+1 for Barcelona ;-)

04-15-2009, 01:47 AM

I propose Barcelona. We (TodoBI-Stratebi), were in Mainz and I think is a suitable place: good comunications, good weather, beers, beach,...

We can collaborate in organization...

That was left on my blog by the guys, not a bad idea if you ask me ;) Certainly the best offer we've had yet.

04-15-2009, 02:54 AM
Ultimately the key question has to be, are the same Pentaho folk who came last time coming again, and are they willing to come to Barcelona?

04-15-2009, 11:16 AM
Barcelona? sounds great - depending on the timing, I will be there :-)

04-16-2009, 07:06 AM
International airport, good weather in summer, suitable infrastructure and ... lots of beer --> Munich :D (which would be Germany again, I know).

Anyway, I wouldn't mind Barcelona either...

04-16-2009, 07:22 AM
Well the key thing, as Jens pointed out when I emailed around a few people, is who thinks can secure a venue on the cheap? (It doesn't have to be in a posh wine place, although if that turns out to be the case, kudos ;) )

04-16-2009, 08:51 PM
Don't you know pentaho guys don't read this forum? Look at Jens, the exception for the rule

04-16-2009, 11:49 PM
(thats only cause Paul told him to ;) ) Argh getting off topic.

Where we going guys? :)

04-17-2009, 03:21 AM
Can any of those who voted for Barcelona provide facilities? i.e. are any of those people based there?

I imagine conferencing facilities wont be cheap?

Alternatively, maybe if enough of us stay at the same hotel we can blag it free?

04-17-2009, 03:45 AM
That being said, although it would be nice, we didn't really have that last year. A room with chairs, tables and a place for a projector, is cool by me.

04-17-2009, 06:18 AM
absolutely - but even that has some sort of a cost!

There's always a pub :) Chairs, wifi, tables, perfect!

05-03-2009, 04:15 PM
Hey Everybody -

Looks like this thread sort of stalled, maybe you were waiting for some input from Pentaho. We can sponsor a gathering similar to last year but I need someone on the ground to tke care of the logistics. Barcelona would work if we can get someone to take care of the arrangements. I talked to Thomas this week about Dublin since he is living there now. He volunteered to find a place and coordinate. If anyone else can do the same for another location, reply to this thread.

Last year we covered the cost of the meeting place, lunch, snacks and the wine cellar tour. We can do the same this year. After last year we talked about doing 2 days instead of 1. That is another topic we should discuss depending on how many people want to do a presentation. Again, reply to this thread if you are interested.

I assume we need to wait until the European holiday season is over (Sept? Oct?) either is fine with me. I'll be there whenever, Thomas is coming, Matt will be there and I haven't talked to Julian yet. As for the Orlando crowd, I'm not sure who but I know a few people are interested. Maybe you could vote for your favorite O-Town Ho-to-Go (or which not not go ;) )

Let's get this thread cranked up again with some ideas!

05-03-2009, 05:16 PM
I would prefer Barcelona, since its more warm there :D
I think Tom is in contact with the guys from StrateBI, which are based in Madrid but also in Barcelona. Don't know if he got any news from them.

I vote for Aaron Philipps (he wants to come and he's been helping with PAT) to come (apart from the one you mentioned + jens)

05-03-2009, 05:42 PM
Barcelona is warm, but there's plenty of fresh Guinness in Dublin.
As far as I'm concerned, the location isn't that important, but the longer we wait, the harder it will get to arrange a conference room, flights, hotels, etc...

Although Mainz was great, most people there seemed to agree one day of presentations/technical talk was very short to get things done, maybe because not all presentations were at the same level. With some quality control, we could filter out the presentation(s) that have no added value, and use the available time more efficiently.

05-03-2009, 07:14 PM
Yeah bart,

Emilio is on the case for a venue in Barcelona, if we don't here anything by the middle of the week I'll mail him again. If he can't find anywhere we can fall back to Dublin, I can fly to either from Leeds/Bradford, about 10 minutes from my house ;)

Regarding presentations, I was thinking about having a sign up form for presentations and people can vote or something on the most relevant to what they want to see.

05-04-2009, 03:25 AM
Perhaps we should put up a speaker invitation. 6 weeks before the event we'll decide. Something like that seems fair.
I would stick to the same concept as in Mainz: no marketing talks, no matter what. People like Julian, Thomas & myself can talk for hours on various Pentaho subjects (and the same goes for others too). We would have meaningful stuff to say too so we should never be so short of topics that we pick advertisement over it.

So yeah, we can make it a bit longer. Making a long trip for just a day worth of talks is perhaps not enough. Perhaps one and a half days spread out over 2 days with a stop early in the afternoon. Day 1 : 9:30am-3:30pm, Day 2 : 9:30am-3:30pm. After that we do "shtuff": socializing, culture, drinking, tappas, whatever.

05-14-2009, 06:12 PM
Hi mates,

you can count on me too for Barcelona but you will all have to promize that you will not cook nor eat snails (private joke)!

Is there any dates in mind because it seems that there are lowcosts joining this destination.

See you later,

05-15-2009, 03:06 AM
Dougs suggestion of sept/oct sounds good..

05-15-2009, 03:13 AM
Tentative date is now Sat 12th, Sun 13th September(Shifted a week later due to Pstoellberger having a cheap holiday to the US). A couple of the Spanish are looking into suitable venues in Barcelona.

05-15-2009, 08:25 AM
Right next change in dates turns out the 12th-13th are a Spanish holiday. Anyway so now the dates are provisionally 19th - 20th sept

07-06-2009, 08:15 AM
Okey dokey then geeks, just a quick heads up to say unless something weird happens later today we should have a venue booked and sorted for Barcelona on the 19th September. Same format as last year, presentations on Saturday, fun stuff on Sunday.

Assuming I get the confirmation that the booking was ok, I'll post details of the venue and room later on and we'll have to come up with a voting/scheduling system for talks and presentations.

07-06-2009, 12:06 PM
There we go girls and boys booked and sorted, 19th September in Barcelona, details will appear on the wiki shortly.

07-07-2009, 03:35 AM
excellent. Expensive hotel tho! I wonder if any cheaper ones near by...

Are people travelling down friday at all?

Anyway i'm in, i'll register on that page shortly.

07-07-2009, 03:40 AM
Yeah, we're working on a list of cheapos. I was going to plan a friday evening gathering like last year for those who arrive early, so, yes! :)

07-07-2009, 03:56 AM
ok great, i'll keep an eye out for that list then! best if we all get into as few hotels as possible!

Being credit crunch times, i'm going to have to pay my way :( now where was that story yesterday about ryanair doing standing room only flights.....

07-07-2009, 04:02 AM
Bah, I paid for myself last year, and that was BEFORE the crunch!

07-07-2009, 04:31 AM
Shows your true dedication to the 'ho community!!

I wonder if Doug will buy the beers again? :D

Presumably top on the demo list is Pat 0.4? Looking forward to that!

07-07-2009, 04:35 AM
0.4? I'm hoping to cram a whole lot of new stuff in by the end of Sept, but yeah we'll have a bells and whistles demo for people.

07-07-2009, 04:36 AM
I see easyjet have flights for 20-30 quid each way at the moment.

07-07-2009, 04:39 AM
I have the luxury of living 5 miles from Leeds Airport and although it wont be as cheap.... roll out of bed, bus to plane, fly, hotel. (well thats the plan ;) )

07-08-2009, 03:49 AM

On the 22nd of September starts SIMO in Madrid. It is one of the most important fairs in Spain.
Just FYI and in case you consider moving to Madrid to gather more people.
I don't really mind and will try to be there wherever you go :-)

07-08-2009, 03:51 AM
Thanks for the information Joe, but the room is already booked and sorted, to be honest we could pick pretty much any date and any country and we'd coincide with some tech fair or another ;)

07-09-2009, 04:41 PM
I only just noticed this thread, because Doug forwarded it to me. (Someone said that Pentaho guys don't read these forums. I guess I just proved their point!)

I'd like to come to this. I will have to negotiate hard with my wife, because I'll be leaving her single-handed with a 6 month old for ~4 days. But it was a lot of fun last time.

I'll repeat Matt's point that it needs to be longer than 1 day to be worth the trip. (I'm flying from California, so it's probably 18 hrs each way.)

I wonder if the PAT/olap4j folks would like to meet a day or two early and do some WORK (i.e. heads down, writing code in a hotel room) before the bull**** starts. I'd be up for that. Tom, Luc, Stollenberger, Bill Seyler, let me know...

Nice thing about Barcelona is that you can work til 12am and then go out on the town. The nightlife only stops when it gets light (or when you want it to).

07-09-2009, 04:43 PM
I certainly would Julian, i was planning on flying out on thursday anyway.

I was trying to talk Luc into flying out but I think he's a bit tight with his money ;)

07-09-2009, 11:03 PM
Shows your true dedication to the 'ho community!!

I wonder if Doug will buy the beers again? :D ...

07-10-2009, 05:40 AM
If not, I'll be there to cover for Doug :D
Just to make sure the "beer" subject is covered.

I'll be there from Friday Evening, going back Monday morning.

07-10-2009, 10:35 AM
In this case, I will come, too :-)

Arriving Saturday noon (sorry, family affairs) and leaving Monday evening.

07-10-2009, 12:23 PM
I will definately come too.

@ Julian: Yeah, would be great to meet and work on olap4j/PAT :-)

Don't know if i can arrive earlier than friday evening. I'm coming back from holidays in california just the weekend before and probably need some work to do :)

07-10-2009, 04:31 PM

If you've got a presentation you want to give, please list it here and we'll sort out the wheat from the chaff closer to the time ;)

07-21-2009, 03:56 AM
sounds like lots coming then :) has anyone booked hotels yet? Tom - where's this forthcoming list of cheap ones? :)

07-21-2009, 04:05 AM
Sorry been away, anyway

Thats a list of hotels on this website that are very near the venue ordered by price, I'll have a bit of a delve around later to see what else I can find, as its right next to the subway, I guess you could easily stay anywhere on that line and get to the venue without any problems.

Payday on Thusday, I'll be booking my flights and hotel then.

07-21-2009, 04:42 AM
If its of any use, I'm flying out on Thursday to make it a bit of a working holiday, but I still need to do it on the cheapish so I'll probably be staying here: http://www.booking.com/hotels/hotel/es/parallel.html?label=gog235jc;sid=10e8ef5b6e7e81d83d4245127d7ffff5;checkin=2009-09-17;checkout=2009-09-21

07-21-2009, 05:59 AM
ive been away too! Shame about the torrential rains! Doh!

Will check that out shortly, tar.

07-24-2009, 08:56 AM
I booked "Hotel Barcelona Universal" (Fri-Mon). It was 401.25 EUR for 3 nights breakfast included. Please note that this is less expensive than the prices listed by booking.com without breakfast (411.95 excl. or 476.15 incl. bf)

07-25-2009, 07:37 AM
I'm not as posh as matt, and thats out of my price range, but i did find the Tryp Apolo (http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/solmeliaapolo.html?aid=303948;label=barcelona-M5iAPd6D1iA2n7m1hmiBoAS2708612481;sid=c38673d61362a7eec42833f292dc7fd9) on booking.com, 304eur for Thursday through till Monday, not bad I guess and very close to where the meet is.

07-27-2009, 04:50 AM
thats presumably where you booked then?

07-27-2009, 05:04 AM
yup, looks pretty nice, i don't think 300eur is that bad for the end of the summer season, right in the city centre, guess its down to budget though ;)

07-29-2009, 12:05 PM
I'll be there from thurs - sunday (like Tom working on friday hopefully) in the Ayre hotel Gran Via (http://www.booking.com/hotels/hotel/es/ayre-gran-via.html?sid=cf6013630009828f6ec3719909e5cceb;checkin=2009-09-17;checkout=2009-09-20)

07-30-2009, 05:57 AM
I'm all booked! Also in the Tryp. I arrive friday afternoon and leave sunday evening.

09-08-2009, 03:15 AM
So, any plans for meeting up Friday night then?

09-08-2009, 03:34 AM
Yeah there is as soon as enric decides to answer his pissing email

09-08-2009, 03:55 AM
fair enough, i guess there's still time to organise all that anyway! Getting ahead of myself here, but was triggerd by your presentation email!

09-11-2009, 05:03 AM
Right whilst we have nothing formal planned for Friday night, it has been suggested by Enric that we meeting the George Payne Irish Bar on Friday night,
