Now that the dev team has completed work on BI Server 3.0, known internally as LIBERTY, everyone is now starting to work on the next release, which we're calling CITRUS. We already have major efforts underway with Pentaho Report Designer as well as Charting. The team which managed the release of LIBERTY has now started focusing in on Data Access, making it easier for you to get to your data.

We've just kicked off a new sprint. Our main focus over the next three weeks will be delivering a thin client UI for defining connections and SQL queries, which will eventually be used in our open source ad hoc reporting, and in our enterprise dashboard product. To make all this possible, we're working on a web service layer which will allow access to Pentaho Metadata. We're also creating a lighter weight metadata model, so it can run within client tools designed with GWT.

Another story we're delivering on is more aggregation capabilities from within Pentaho Metadata's query builder. Before, metadata modelers needed to specify the aggregation for a measure, now the modeler will choose from a list of aggregations, and the user can choose which aggregation they'd like to use. Finally, we're also working on a couple small build issues that we hope will accelerate our release process.

You can check out the progress over at the Data Access Sprint 1 home page (http://wiki.pentaho.com/display/PMOPEN/EEE+-+Simplifying+Data+Access+-+Sprint+1). Feel free to ask questions in this forum discussion!

We wrapped up Data Access Sprint 1, you can check out the results in this CI build of the platform:

Ad hoc reporting can now use a SQL statement to drive a report. Check it out and let us know what you think!
