View Full Version : Automatic Relationship Recognition of E/R model - is it possible?

Hi,
I have created E/R model for the raw data that I am importing via an ETL process. Basically I have some transaction tables that are linked to some dimensional tables. All tables have proper relationships defined.
Is there a way that the Pentaho Metadata Studio automatically identifies/reads this relationships like other programs can do? I don't want to really sit here one hour and define all the relationships manually. Ok, I still would have to add Join Type and cardinality, but anyway, as long as all the relationships are automatically read in, that saves a lot of time.

Also, it would be nicer to see a more detailed table view in the relationship overview. It would be great to see exactly the to which columns it links. For example, I have one table with 4 foreign keys. Or is this already possible? I am using the latest version.

Thanks,
Diddy

Hi Diddy,

At this time, there's no automated way to generate relationships. I think it's a good idea though, I also like your idea of showing additional information in the table / relationship view. Could you create separate enhancement requests over at http://jira.pentaho.com/browse/PMD ? Add as much detail as you can, you can vote on the enhancements as well.

Thanks,

Will

Hi Will,
Thanks for your answer! I am happy to write this request ... I followed your link but I didn't find anywhere something saying "Create new request" or so. Furthermore it seems that I would need a login (I couldn't find somewhere to create a login). Where can I get a login from?
Thanks,
Diddy

i'll also vote for this - it had been discussed before, but i was told it wouldnt work as the feeling was that the relationships you'd want to use wouldnt be the ones defined in the db - which did seem odd to me at the time. So anyway post the link once you've raised it!

Thanks for your help! I have created one improvement request: http://jira.pentaho.com/browse/PMD-517

It would be really great if this could be implemented!
Best regards,
