Default Carte Slave unable to access the repository

I have setup a carte cluster using pdi 4.4 and mysql 5.5 following directions I found here:
    http://open-bi.blogspot.com/2009/11/...-serie-of.html

then I followed the directions here to try to test the carte cluster:
    http://diethardsteiner.blogspot.com/...on-remote.html

the issue I'm having is when I try to run the transformation I get this error:

    org.pentaho.di.core.exception.KettleException:
    org.pentaho.di.core.exception.KettleException:
There was an error during transformation split

    org.pentaho.di.core.exception.KettleException:
An error occurred sending a slave transformation: org.pentaho.di.core.exception.KettleException:
Unable to connect to the repository with name 'admin'

    Error connecting to the repository!

Error occured while trying to connect to the database

Error connecting to database: (using class org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver)
    Communications link failure

The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. The driver has not received any packets from the server.
