Question Configuring connections in Java (or java use in general?)

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before. My searches were futile.

I am using version 4.4.1.2 of the kettle java libraries. I have a set of kjb and ktr files created using the desktop client. They have a connection already configured but I want to update the connection in java based on some config settings (which will vary for each server we put this on). Is there a way to do this without modifying the XML files? If so, can someone point me to an open source example or some docs or something to that effect?

NOTE: I have been looking here but haven't found the answer there so please let me know if there is a better place to look when working with the libraries in java:

    Thanks!

You are more interested in embedding than extending, I understand.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Yes, embedding the kettle libraries in a java app is what I am doing.

The page Building Transformations Dynamically points you to the TransMeta class, which has methods to manipulate database connections.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
