Default Java fatal error when connecting to a 4D database (ODBC)

    Hello all,

I'm currently experiencing a fatal java error when running a job with kitchen.bat via a windows schedule.

Below is the error part in the log generated in the commandline: The log file which is refered to inside this error is added as attachment: hs_err_pid6200.txt

    What I already know:
    • When I run the process manually in Kettle, it just works.
    • When the process is run from the .bat file. It throws the error 100% of the time.
    • The "## A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:## EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" has something to do with memory access. But this error will only show when the process is run from the .bat file and when it has to make a connection to a 4D database via the 4D ODBC driver.

Anyone else encountered this problem? Or might be able to provide information to fix this error?

Still couldnt find a fix for this.

Installed the latest JDK version 7u51 (32 and 64 bit)
Installed the JDK 6u45 (32 and 64 bit)

tried running kitchen and pan with both 32 and 64 bit
Tried three different drivers: 12.5, 13.3 and 14

In all cases the transformation does work when run in Spoon. Pan and Kitch it fails with the above error.

    Hi,

I'm experiencing exactly the same error. Did you solve this?

    Thanks,
    fx

Couldnt fix it within Pentaho in a quick way.

    I found a workaround:

I downloaded RazorSQL, a SQL client tool with commandline capabilities.

In Pentaho I created a job which calls the RazorSQL commandline to extract data from the 4D database to a CSV file. (can be done with the 'Shell' step on job level) (RazorSQL can connect and extract to the 4D db without errors with the ODBC driver)
Then I used the RazorSQL commandline to import the CSV files into my staging database tables. Which, of course, can also be called from Pentaho with the 'shell' step.

Simple answer is to download the 4D JDBC driver. Then use the generic database and enter the JDBC configuration.
    ODBC should NOT be used.

Good luck with that. The JDBC driver has been discontinued in 2004

My mistake - the Sourceforge site showed that it was updated in 2013. But when I dug into it more, I discovered that it hadn't been updated since 2001.

Your only other choice is to try to locate a fully supported ODBC-JDBC bridge. The Sun/Oracle one has been depreciated for years, and is removed in Java 1.8
You CANNOT rely on the Sun/Oracle ODBC-JDBC bridge.
