Thread: ignoring previous step values

    Default ignoring previous step values

I have a simple transformation that uses a xml input and produces a csv file. After the csv file gets generated I would like to check for the existing of the file. I added a "file exist" step, but I can't figure it out how to type the file name since in the "Filename field" I get a drop down with the names of the columns of the previous step. I'm sure I'm missing something trivial but I do not know what that is.

    regards, Hugo

I think that you better create a different transformation - or even use a step within a job to check if the file has been created.
Creating a file and checking for its existence in the same transformation is not logical (according to PDI) because those 2 steps are initialised at the same time (even if the hop goes from 1 to 2).

    I would do:
    JOB1 has
    1. Transformation that create the csv file
    2. Step that check the existence of that file

One of the reassuring Kettle virtues is total obedience.
If you tell Kettle to create an output file it will just do that - or fire an error.
I suggest to handle that error and otherwise assume the file to exist.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
