    Default Can't start up BISERVER-CE 5.3

Problem exists in recent versions such as 5.3
    The following errors were detected
One or more system listeners failed. These are set in the systemListeners.xml.
org.pentaho.platform.api.engine.PentahoSystemException: PentahoSystem.ERROR_0014 - Error while trying to execute startup sequence for org.pentaho.commons.system.LoadDriversListener

    Install Dir - C:\Temp\Pentaho\Pentaho 5.1\biserver-ce
    Java 1.7.79 64 bit
    Win 7 Pro 64 bit

    From Pedro Alves
    1. uncompress to c:/pentaho (there's some silly issues with windows and file path length)
    2. use jdk instead of jre - this means the JAVA_HOME environment variable should be set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_79\jre rather than to C:\Program Files\Java\jre7

Don't use Java 8 at this time.

these two tips fixed the problem.

Correction - "1. uncompress to c:/pentaho (there's some silly issues with windows and file path length"
i tested this and got a different finding. it still works if the path is
    C:\Temp\Pentaho\Pentaho 5.3\biserver-ce, for example.
the main thing is that you HAVE to use a JDK and the JAVA_HOME must be set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_79\jre rather than to the public JRE (C:\Program Files\Java\jre7)
