Strange behavior. I'm on W7, PDI 7.0, and used mysql-connector-java-5.1.38-bin.jar (slightly earlier than your version) to connect to MySQL 5.7.11 without issue. Configured PDI DB connection as JDBC using MySQL defaults.

What are your PDI database connection settings? Is there anything non-default going on there?

Maybe do some obvious checks (I'm sure you've already confirmed, but can't hurt):
    * did you copy the .jar to /lib/ for correct PDI version (especially if you have multiple versions in same/similar directories)?
    * is your localhost's MySQL engine running?

Another Windows-esque check of your MySQL jar + MySQL instance: try using a non-Pentaho Java-based SQL tool to use that specific JAR to hit your localhost MySQL engine. This can help verify that there's no issue in your MySQL JAR + MySQL engine.

I use SQuirrel SQL Client for just this kind of testing (plus it's a nifty, minimalisitic SQL client).

Giovanni: Were you able to resolve this? I am having exact same issue with only difference being I am using this jar version, mysql-connector-java-5.1.41-bin.jar.

This indicates that the issue is not within PDI. This issue is potentially a Windows Firewall, or binding issue. It is saying that PDI is trying to talk to the database, but the DB is not answering.
