Default New to Kettle - Transformation Question

    Small Question:

I'm trying to just set up some scenarios to test the functionality of Kettle and get used to the Spoon and all.

I'm trying to set up a simple transformation from an excel spreadsheet to a sql database .

How do I set up the transformation layer, where I tell the program which column in the Excel sheet goes to which column in the table? I'm coming from an Enterprise Manager background, and I'm looking for similar transformation functionality, perhaps even including some sql or scripting between the copy from/to the database.

    Thank you!

You read from the database using SQL and the Table Input step.
That steps send rows of values to the Excel Output step.
In that step you can specify which fields to export, in what order etc.

So the "Mapping" is in this case built into the Excel Output step.

    Default would it be wrong

What I did was too place an Excel Input(INPUT), I then added a Select Value (TRANSFORM) and then finally a Table Output (OUTPUT) It works very well, and the reverse also works very well for getting data from 'n DB and placing it in a spreadsheet. What I am struggling with however is getting data from various tables (inner & outer joins) and then placing the data in a spreadsheet and then formatting the data too look and feel like I want it too look and feel. (Formatting - Bold/ Colour/ etc)
    Kind Regards

You're having trouble with that because you are using an ETL tool for reporting.
There are plenty of tools around that do reporting just fine.
In the open source space there is Pentaho Reporting, BIRT, JasperReports, etc.
These tools all have user tools, designers, wizards...

    Enjoy!

Thanks! What alexhart suggested was just what I was trying to do.

    New Question, though! :

I'm importing an excel spreadsheet to a mysql database... When I use the Select Value transform, only the first four (of five) columns are showing up? I can't get the fifth column to appear in the transformation to copy over.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks!
