    Default Database connection

I am facing a problem that when running pan.bat as scheduled task under XP Pro Server that often the first attempt to connect to the source db (Informix) fails and then the rest of the transformation does not run (of course not).

When I start the same task a minute later, it works fine.

I am trying to log things at the moment but have a short question in advance: Is it possible that my first SQL Select in the ktr is being executed before the connection to that db has been set up or would Kettle wait for the db connection before executing any SQL ?

    Thanks for any thoughts
    Jens

Connecting to a database will happen in initialization phase. Executing queries during the main line... so it's normally not possible that a query would execute before the connection is established.

OK, thanks for clarification. I will try to log this problem to check if this will bring any new ideas (problem is that it does not run "accidentally" as it also runs "by accident". So I have to try and retry before getting the correct log file).

    Thanks anyway.

    Hi Jens,

this sounds like a time-out related problem at the informix db or JDBC driver. May be there are some time-out parameters at the server or JDBC-side you can change?

    Best regards to Hamburg,
    Jens

    Hi Jens,

best regards to Mainz ! Hope everything is fine.

Thanks for the hint, I will try to check this.

Anyway I was able to log the error messages (in detailed log level) and this is what it brings (I post only - what I believe are - the relevant lines:

    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - DWH - New database connection defined
    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - B2 - New database connection defined
    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - adr_t.0 - ERROR (version 2.4.1-M2, build 183 from 2007/03/27 10:30:09) : An error occurred, processing will be stopped:
    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - adr_t.0 - ERROR (version 2.4.1-M2, build 183 from 2007/03/27 10:30:09) : Error occured while trying to connect to the database
    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - adr_t.0 - ERROR (version 2.4.1-M2, build 183 from 2007/03/27 10:30:09) :

    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - adr_t.0 - ERROR (version 2.4.1-M2, build 183 from 2007/03/27 10:30:09) : Message text will be provided in later releases java.lang.NullPointerException

    2007/08/30 21:00:04 - DWH - Connected to database.

The error occurs by trying to connect to the B2 database (informix). Does this bring any new ideas about the problem ?

Thanks for any comments and best regards
    Jens

LOL... it's an informix/informix jdbc driver problem... we don't do such funny error messages "Message text will be provided in later releases". You can try contacting IBM if you have a support agreement with them. If you look on the net for that error message you will find a lot of people experiencing the same.

    Sven

    Sven,

I must confess that I smiled too a bit when I saw that "error message" though it does not really help with my problem.

Thanks anyway, maybe I will search the net and see if anybody else has a clue. Otherwise I will check if our support agreement with IBM and see if this includes support for the JDBC driver too.

    Thanks and best regards
    Jens
