Default Cannot view some steps from a 2.5.2 transformation in 3.0.0?

I have a script that was written and run with 2.5.1 and I tried to open it and look through the steps in 3.0.0 to work on upgrading the javascript steps in it.

I found that there are several steps in it that cannot be opened. When I try, I get an "Oops" dialog that shows one of a few exceptions depending on the step. I'm guessing it isn't expected behavior so I'm posting the transformation. If I failed to do something that would have avoided this issue, please just give me a slap on the head and send me on my way.

Here is an example of one of the exceptions:
    java.lang.NullPointerException

Variable mysqlPortNumber is not declared, and the error on that is eaten somewhere.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand that answer, sboden.
As I've reviewed this transformation in the prior Kettle version, I've come up with several things that have made me say WTF. I'm not sure how the darn thing ever worked.

My main issue though, is I am unable to view many of the steps of this transformation in 3.0.0. I just get an error dialog.

All of the Filter and JS steps are completely unviewable, and the Select steps can be opened, but they are accompanied by an error dialog as well.

What I see when I debug it is that you use variables in the database connections, and if you don't set them you get the error message you attached first.

    So

    1) Are you on 3.0.0GA
    2) Did it ever work before?

    Sven

So does that mean that in 3.0.0GA, it is no longer possible to view Filter, JS, and Select Values steps in design mode if you configure your DB connection to use variables? This can't be by design can it?

    1) Yes.
    2) In 2.5.2 I can at least open and view the steps mentioned above without getting "Oops" dialogs with exception messages.

In 3.0 variable "scope" is more preciser specified than in 2.5.2
Try specifiying your variables in kettle.properties and try again.
