    I am new to pentaho reporting . How are database hierarchies handled in pentaho reporting

    Can you clarify your question? Are you talking in OLAP terms? Or do you mean, how do you define levels of aggregation for a report written against a relational DB using straight SQL? If you mean the latter, the Report Designer has a very intuitive/simple interface for defining those levels of aggregation. It's very similar to most report writing tools. There is a navigation tree for the report design that breaks down all aspects of the layout (i.e. Report header, page header, etc). There is a point in this tree that will allow you to add group values from fields available in your query resultset.
