    Default Linux installer does nothing

On Ubuntu gusty, running pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin does nothing. No messages or other information. Now what?

are you trying to run it by clcking on it or from a terminal? If not try running it from a terminal, sh linuxinstallerfile.sh styley and see what it says.

    Default From nothing to worse

    In a terminal: ./pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin
The above does nothing, just returns a shell prompt.

    Your suggested: sh pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin styley
    Produces: pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

The 518 MB file is reported by the "file" command as being an ELF executable, so it is not surprising that 'sh' didn't care for it.

Not to sound overly disbelieving but I would have assumed this problem would have popped up somewhere before seeing how long 1.6GA has been available. Corrupted download possibly?

    Default Downloading again...no MD5sum

OK, I'm downloading 500MB again. I don't see the file MD5 sums listed in the SourceForge notes nor the Wiki, so I can't tell if a file is corrupt or not. SourceForge gave me an HTTP link, so wget transferred with the usual checking of TCP/IP data, and the first file is the expected size of 518819792 bytes.

Default What is proper command to run installer?

While I'm waiting for the download: what is the proper command to run the installer? I did not find your "styley" parameter when doing a wiki search.

    ./pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin

    or

    sh pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin styley

Please ignore my english slang, I was thinking it was
    Code:
    sh pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin
but that is a bit silly on 2nd thoughts. But this installer has been around since late 2007 so I can't believe no one would have noticed

Default md5sum of installer, wants ld-linux.so.2

    md5sum of 516a1d4a7247822325790c5363d9e042 pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin

I downloaded it twice and both files cmp identical. Neither copy does anything visible.

    strace ends with:
open("/lib/ld-linux.so.2", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    _exit(127)

    $ ls -l /lib/ld-linux*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2008-03-13 15:46 /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 -> ld-2.6.1.so

Hmm. Pentaho requires 2 cpus, but won't run on a 2 CPU 64 bit machine? I hope my other server, with 8 CPUs, isn't also too modern for Pentaho.

Default Runs on other server but has installation bug

The Installer does run on my production server, but has a bug early on. It gives radio buttons for choosing between easy installer (configuring MySQL) and advanced mode (installs a configuration tool). Choosing advanced mode emits a warning box that the option is not available.

Default Installation must be done on a terminal

Installation instructions do not say it must be run on a terminal and not in background mode. The installer asks on the terminal if the updater is allowed to run, although all other questions are in the graphical user interface. (The second and third times I ran the installer were in background so I could find answers to questions such as the mysql directory)

Installation instructions should also specify that if a new copy of the mysql server is not to be installed, the path to the directory where the mysql binaries are will be needed (ie: /usr/bin).

Installation instructions should also describe the kind of MySQL user needed during installation (root, or one with all database access and creation options plus RELOAD ability), and that a MySQL user which will be used to access the database will be needed.

When I ran the installer in background and told it to start Pentaho, I ended up with an installer process waiting for a start process...both of which required kill-9 to stop them.

I'm done for the day, but if no one has helped any further by tomorrow morning I'll download a copy and take a look for you.

    Default Localhost success

It looks like the installer worked on my 32 bit system. But although it asked for the various port numbers, I see 127.0.0.1 in the log file and I can't access the application over the Internet. So the installer doesn't know either how to define a DNS host name.

With a text-mode web browser I was able to connect to the server at my specified port, but without Javascript and graphics I can't use it well. I'm back to the other problem of how to configure a DNS name; maybe the installed version behaves differently than the PCI version which I'd previously been trying to get working on the Internet.

No pentaho system is DNS/hostname aware, I came up with a bash hack for something I was working on that takes the hostname for eth0 and puts it in the right place.

Default Installer does work on Internet after editing files

Got it working on the Internet by following the directions for defining the host name. I'll reload the PCI version and try again the same changes to see if that version behaves the same way as the Installer version.

However, the Installer asks for definition of several ports other than 8080, thus there are other ports which may conflict with other applications and no clues how to find and reconfigure them.

This makes the non-Installer versions pretty useless in the wild, as they in effect require that clients install them on dedicated machines -- one has to convince a client to buy a dedicated server in order to even test a solution, but why should they buy a server if they might not want the solution?

No the idea in the wild is that if you already have a tomcat or jboss running then you deploy it in that.

    Default Java 6?

If the other applications are running on Java 6, can Pentaho be added to their Tomcat?
