Default Jfree reports & Reports created using Report designer

    Hi everyone,

Am new to pentaho. I'm able to generate reports using Report designer. I understand that one can create Jfree reports using Design studio.(hope I'm right). But, I dont understand the difference between Jfree reports and reports created using Report Designer. Can someone please explain.

JFreeReports is the engine behind the reporting system inside pentaho, the report designer is a way to generate a valid xml specification without having to hack away at the xml in an editor.

Im still confused about a few things.
There is an option to create reports from design studio using "jfree report wizard".Reports created using this is ".xreportspec", if am not wrong.

And there is also an option to create reports from report designer (.report). Now, what is the difference between the .report and .xreportspec file?

And what is design studio used for? Is it only to create ".xreportspec " reports?

Can you please clarify my confusions.

    thanx in advance
    vidhya.
I think, or though I could be mistaken that a .report and .xreportspec are pretty much just legacy differences, although I could be wrong. And as far as I know the report designer included in the the eclipse packages is the same as the report designer stand alone, just embedded for ease of use. Although saying all that I've never used the eclipse report designer so I may be off the mark. The main reason for the eclipse packages(design studio) is for the xaction editor which makes editing the resulting xaction much easier to add things like javascript, user input etc etc.
