Default Beginners Question - Data Modeling

    Hi there!

Well, I need to build a data warehouse and later on do some data mining there and stuff.

    I just stumbled over pentaho.

I had a look at some documentation, but one thing I simply couldn't find:
How (or where) can I create my data base? I mean... the module "Data Integration" provides techniques to get data from existing databases and other sources, but I just thought that pentaho would provide a solution to actually do some data modeling and the data input from the scratch?
    Which module provides this functionality?

Or do I really need to have my data "before" I can work with pentaho?

Pentaho attaches on to any JDBC/ODBC capable database, but it doesn't actually model your current data into a warehouse for you, that you have to do on your own, hell no BI tool will actually model the information itself the complexities your asking of a program there are enormous
This is a signature.... everyone gets it.

Perhaps you misunderstood (or I spoke a bit ambigous).

Of course I don't want any application to do the data modeling for me.
I would just like to have some tool.

Of course I could just set up a database with other tools and implement some interface to fill it with my data.
But I just though that pentaho would do the technical stuff for me, so I could concentrate on the modelling and the data input only.

Ah well in that case you want to check out PDI(Aka Kettle).
This will extract data from pretty much anywhere and put it pretty much anywhere.

Kettle is an ETL tool, so it helps you copying stuff from one side to another. But you might also want to check out the Pentaho-Metadata (which allows you to define business views on top of your data) and the Mondrian Cube Designer (which helps you defining a OLAP cube definition for your data-warehouse).

All of the tools can be downloaded either as guided process ("You want to do ... therefore you need to download ...") from http://www.pentaho.com/download or as simple crude list from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pentaho

For an open source ER diagramming tool, you might want to look at Power*Architect:

Thanks, I think Kettel is what I was looking for.

And I'll have a look at the diagramm tool, too.
