Default The long wait for 3.1GA...

    Hi folks,

    Just a quick update.

The long wait for 3.1GA is almost over. We're solving the last few issues in the new database dialog (JDBC option retention, SAP/R3 db name & double listing of types).
A lot of work lately has gone into updating the docs and fixing a last set of bugs and we'll continue to fix a few others until the db dialog is OK.
The welcome pages was updated, a "Getting Started" landing page was created and 8 small flash demos got added to make a things painfully clear for n00bs.
The steps and job entries got documented (most if not all of them anyway) and we ported and updated the Carte/Kitchen/Pan docs on the wiki as well.
The Spoon users guide was ported earlier by Jem and that will have to suffice, it's wikified now and ready to live a life on its own.

Finally, I created a change log titled "What's new in PDI 3.1?".
This high level overview took longer to write than expected since so many things changed or were added in this release.

If you have any last-minite i18n work to do then this is the right time to do it :-)
If you feel like there is still a blocking bug left, let us know ASAP as well and we'll dive into it.
All the other bugs will have to wait for the next point releases.

    All the best,

    Matt

I was really hoping to get the Vertica bulk loader included in 3.1,
but Vertica has taken a bit too long to get me the necessary jar and
API docs. I should get it by Monday, and it will likely only take me
a few hours to implement since it should be nearly identical to the
Postgres bulk loader. I imagine that it is probably too late in the
schedule to consider including it in 3.1 though?

Also, speaking of the Postgres bulk loader, I believe revision 9042
was missing a check in for the PGBulkLoaderDialog.java file? I'm
currently getting compile errors on trunk due to missing methods.

There is just one bug that I can think of at the moment that I'd like
to be considered as potentially blocking for 3.1:
    http://jira.pentaho.com/browse/PDI-1711 -- copy tables wizard doesn't
appear to be generating valid jobs/transformations. This one seems
fairly important to me just because it is likely to be something that
a person evaluating Kettle for the first time could bump into.

    Hi Daniel,

Another day isn't going to matter, since the ETA for the fixes to the dialog is Monday/Tuesday.
As such, if you have the bulk loader on Monday, you can check it in but put it under "Experimental".
The latest revision (9048) compiled fine for me, but I checked in some small changed to the PG bulk loader anyway :-)

    All the best,
    Matt

Let's just get rid of the schema for now (like it was originally).
The long term solution would be to allow the user to select and drop tables from/to schemas (if there are any).
That would require 2 trees to be displayd in stead of 2 lists.
For 3.1 that change looks a bit too large for my taste :-)

I checked in the change to fix the copy tables wizard.
Unfortunately, I was not able to finish working on the Vertica bulk
loader due to some pressing issues at work.
It looks very straight forward and probably only a couple more hours
of work, but I'm not sure if I'll have it today or not.

Yeah, we've been struggling with the new XUL database dialog a bit.
Had to fix another 3 or 4 bugs in there. I think we've seen the worst of it, but these were bugs with a high impact so they had to be fixed first.
In the mean time we're coming to the end of the list I think.

I was planning to let the GA release slip as being the nightly build of tonight (or tomorrow morning, depending on where you live).

As far as marketing etc goes, they plan to do a joint announcement with the Pentaho platform and PDI in "a few weeks".

If you lack the time right now to create the bulk loader, we can create a plugin for it as well, test it and include it in 3.1.1, 3.0.6 etc.

    Take care,
    Matt
