    Talking Pentaho vs Access

Here's one for you, the guy I work with has been tasked to make a report that ends up being 1 excel spreadsheet full of static data, our end users need to be able to run this off our supply chain software in real time, which does create certain logistical problems for us.

Anyway he's pressing ahead with an Access based solution that will involve us buying an access license for every end user(about 40 of them). So how do you tell your boss who's got far more experience than you and wont take kindly to being told he's wrong, that he's being stupid?

    Cheers

    Tom

strike up a convo with him about opensource business statagy and point out how it's helping to lower the costs to run a business.
then point out this case study you reed with a close source solution vs an open source solution in TCO for something you don't remember. and leave it at that as you talk about the details till he's interesting then let him know the details of the case.
the case is access vs pentaho... SUPRISE...
project the TCO over the next 5 years?
and guess what you got your use case.

If that doesn't work there isn't much anything you could do to

    Hope that help,

    Nic

Do it (or part of its) using Pentaho anyways and show him what you've done. Hopefully, if he sees beyond the current business requirement, he'll see the benefit and potential of an alternate solution.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

.. and maybe you should have the TCO discussion with someone higher in the ranks. Somebody who gets paid to make reports is probably not the same one who decides that your company needs so many new licenses. Always follow the money
