    Hi,

there are at least two different ways to create dashboards, both are described either in the wiki or in a PDF on Sourceforge. Here is one link: http://wiki.pentaho.com/display/COM/...oard+Framework

OK, I've looked at the PDF out on Sourceforge and that shows me how to build a dashboard using an older version of Pentaho. I'm using 2.0 right now and I'd like to know how to set up a dashboard from start to finish. I looked at the WIKI link that was provided and it talks about downloading CDF.

Is there a step by step example for how to create say the Steel Wheels dashboard? I'm looking at the WIKI, at stuff on Souceforge and it seems to me nothing is standardized. I have downloaded Pentaho 2.0, I want to create my own dashboard. Where is a defined step by step manual? When I say step by step, I mean I'm looking for something to help me set up everything (index.properties, index.xml, dashboard.url etc).

Should I be using CDF only? If so why is that something else I need to download rather than getting with my Pentaho download?

Sorry for the questions but the many different options is becoming frustrating.

currently the cdf iss a community led addon so for that reason at the moment you need to download the cdf and copy into the bi server on the plus side dashboard creation is much easier requiring only javascript and html experience

Stop making simple things sound hard

Download CDF-2.1-RC1, follow the installation instructions, and start playing with it.

Pedro, where do I download your installation project from (notes on manual install say I can use your installation project or do the install manually)?

    Thanks

The CDF installation is for the Build Framework, as you aren't building from source download the tarball from
    http://wiki.pentaho.com/download/att....zip?version=1

and then follow the instructions here:
    http://wiki.pentaho.com/download/att....txt?version=1

    Tom,

Thanks for the info. I did this and when I opened up the instructions they referenced folders that are not in the 2.1-RC1.zip extract. For example, target-preconfiguredinstall-tomcat doesn't exist in my extract but the instructions are telling me to use files from this folder. I did a quick check and these folders and files do exist in CDF-2.0.1 but I need the CDF-2.1-RC1 version.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Bob

Ah yeah it has changed a bit recently.

The stuff in solutions is sample dashboards, put the contents of solution/ into pentaho-solutions.

The contents of target-dist mirror the tomcat directory of the pci so for example target-dist/server/webapps/pentaho is tomcat/webapps/pentaho, and the file in project-cdf/solution/system/custom/ goes in pentaho-solution/system/custom.

You can ignore the config files they are for CBF.

And don't copy over web.xml just add the 2 sets of dashboard tags.

Pleasure, just don't hook it up to an Access backend else I'll be forced to come round and burn your servers

No problem on the Access backend. I do have an issue though maybe you can help me. I have copied the files as stated. Then I stopped and restarted the pentaho services but that folder doesn't show up in the User Console. I have even changed in index.properties in the Steel Wheels/Anaylsis folder, the name to be something different than 2. Pentaho Analysis and that's not even registering. Thanks again in advance for all the help you've provided me today.

erm well, copying those files into the solutions should have provided you with a Dashboards folder
you may need to refresh the repository ( in the menu at the top).

i'm not sure if the solutions have any .url files supplied so you can just run one. If not try something like

    http://localhost:8080/pentaho/Dashbo...oard_broadcast

Thanks, that worked, refreshing the repository. Running the link though doesn't. I get a 404 The requested resource /pentaho/dashboards is unavailable.

Well one of 2 things, dashboards is probably you just typing it but it is case sensitive, and if you are getting a 404 did you update your web.xml properly?

    Tom,

I did check my web.xml and it is jsp/Dashboards.jsp
    Code:
    <servlet>
      <servlet-name>Dashboards</servlet-name>
      <jsp-file>/jsp/Dashboards.jsp</jsp-file>
     </servlet>
    my directory structure is
    /pentaho-solutions/Dashboards/home_dashboard

Again, sorry for all the questions, this is why I was asking if there was a document that took me step by step. I have never worked with anything like this type of setup.

    Thanks
    Bob

Yeah its still very much work in progress thats the problem....

There is another set of Dashboard tags further down the web.xml, sorry thats what I meant by set and not just a pair, probably should have made that a bit clearer.

Anyway I have to sleep a little, so good luck and if you're still stuck, post here and either someone else will pick it up or I'll respond in roughly 6 1/2 hrs

OK, I fixed that issue, but when I try to run the any of the samples, Home Sample, Filter Sample or Sample I get an error on the page stating, Line: 503, Char: 17, Error: Object Required, Code: 0, URL: http://pentaho.producepro.local:8080...rd=home_sample

Also, I have the actually dashboard I'm trying to build and it is showing up in the repository but when I try to open it, it tries to open in a new window (specifically it says is it OK to navigate from this window). If I go to the window it says ///pentaho/CoastPro Address Not Valid. If I stay in my window it shows up with an unspecified error and the URL has mantle in it. I copied the actual .jsp code for this dashboard from SW and stripped everything out just so it says HI. It still doesn't work. I copied this to the SWDashboard and it works fine. UGH!

    Any ideas? Thanks!

What I did was download CDF-2.1-RC1 and then followed the instructions in Post #10 in this thread. I am still having trouble bringing up the solution example and so I have asked Tom for some more help.

CDF and .jsp dashboards? You're a liitle confused.

Anyway, don't start developing cdf dashboards until you make sure the examples work. Maybe you forgot to copy the template files...

No, I copied all the templates, I updated the web.xml (all done according to the directions in post 10 of this thread), if there are more changes I need I was unaware of them.
