    Default About licence fee re download and use Pentahol

    Hi folks,

    I read;
    Pentaho BI Platform License FAQ
    http://community.pentaho.com/faq/platform_licensing.php

    On "Why is Pentaho using the General Public License (GPL) for the Pentaho BI Platform?" it says;
    Code:
    .....
    The GPL is well understood by the market and the legal community and has notable precedents such as MySQL, Java and the Linux kernel as GPL-licensed projects
    ......
    and expect to clarify whehter I can download and run "Pentaho", free of charge, similar to MySQL, JAVA, Linux Kernel, etc. Its users are at liberty to subscribe paid technical support which is NOT compulsory as a condition using Pentahol. Please shed me some light. TIA

    Well, its GPL, so you are free to use Pentaho how ever you like without having to pay licence fees (As said in the quote: Exactly like in Linux, OpenJava or MySQL) as long as you comply to the licence. If you distribute your solution, everyone who receives a copy of your program must be made aware that this is containing GPL software and must be granted access to the source code (as outlined in the FSF's "Practical Guide to the GPL"

    Of course, we are happy if you subscribe to the paid support - but no one forces you to do this and whether you have paid support or not does not affect your rights on how to use the GPL'd software.
