Thread: Is 4.0.1 stable?

  1. #1

    Default Is 4.0.1 stable?

I see on the developers forum that the 4.0.2 branch has been created. Can we assume 4.0.1 is good to go? Will there be a formal release or should we just grab it from version control?

    Thanks,
    David

It's stable. CE builds can be had at any time from Subversion. (perhaps someone can throw a build somewhere)
EE customers can obviously download it from their portal.

    Hey Matt,
Pardon my ignorance on this, but I'm an EE customer and don't know what portal you are referring to. I have been looking forward to the release of 4.0.1, as it fixes some major functionality issues for me.

    Thanks,

    Nathan

    Sweet, thanks!

Update: I'm having trouble starting Spoon on OS X. I've tried compiling from source and grabbing the latest build from Hudson, same problem:
    Code:
    Aug 3 15:49:46 grouse com.apple.launchd.peruser.822561582[212] ([0x0-0x14d84d7].Data Integration 64-bit[54135]): posix_spawn("/Users/djantzen/Downloads/pdi-ce-4.0.1-SNAPSHOT-r13696/Data Integration 64-bit.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub", ...): Permission denied

32-bit does the same thing. Environment:

    OS X 10.6.4

    java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02-279-10M3065)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.3-b01-279, mixed mode)

    Any suggestions?

Update 2: Perhaps this tickets needs to be reopened: http://jira.pentaho.com/browse/PDI-3882

    Update 3:
I tried setting the executable bit on JavaApplicationStub like that ticket suggests and now I see a classpath error:

    Code:

    Hi Nathan,

You can go to http://kb.pentaho.com/ and log in there.
You can download all new validated Pentaho EE software from that location.

PDI 4.0.1 EE should be available really soon.

    Matt

    Red face Windows?

    Hi Matt.
If I want to upgrade to 4.0.1 (CE), do I need to download the source files and build a system myself?

Can anyone at Pentaho build a system and upload it to Sourceforge within the Data Integration folder?

    Thanks.

The bad news is that Pentaho has chosen not to release community editions point versions to save resources. The good news is that building Kettle yourself is indeed very easy to do.

However, since I realize it's not evident for everyone and since the same question keeps coming back you can download it over here from my personal S3 file space.

    Talking Thanks

    Hi Matt.
Thanks for posting the finished build.

The good news is that building Kettle yourself is indeed very easy to do.
Maybe it is worth adding a sticky post in this forum with links to instructions?

If everything was on the forum or the wiki, who would buy our book?

Okay, okay! You could Google around for it.

    In short:

    1. Get the source code
    2. Run the "ant zip" command.
    3. ...
    4. profit!

    Hey Matt -
When will the official download for EE 4.01 GA be available? It appears to be downloadable as a trial EE 4.01, but it's still not on the portal for existing customers?

    .....
YES! "Malgré tout" ou trotzdem ou (I forgot in English), I will!

It's not for the same usage :
    - the book : printer friendly (not so much pages printed and wasted), in order with a "Table of Contents", the best way to hold some good practices, etc....
    - the forum : for searching the last news, the best way of tuning some actions, for exchange with others who probably already had the same troubles....

but, thanks for the links and for all of your great job (also thanks to all of you : the PDI team)!!!!

Just a last remark : I use the PDI 4.0.0 CE, if I want the 4.0.1 CE , I must remember my "Java programming curses" to compile it... and to correct my PDI version..... For my 10 jobs, I will get quicker to switch to Talend instead of trying to compile Kettle on Windows.... or am I alone in this situation?
I use and follow Kettle since 2006... But I do the same think with Talend, they offer the last version of the CE.... Today, I'm happy I didn't keep all my jobs in the same tool....

I think it's a bad decision from Pentaho.... and replacing the 4.0.0 by the 4.0.1 on sourceforge don't need a lot of ressources.... Or did I think wrong?

P.S : sorry for my bad english

Sorry Oliv, I was only attempting to make a joke.
Situations change all the time. I'm sure you'll get your point versions at some point in the near future.

    Good luck mixing tools,

    Matt

i must say kettle is by far the easiest project in pentaho to build, so dont be scared off by that. But as for the 4.0.1 issues, i think it should depend on the nature of the fixes in 4.0 - take platform 3.5.2 - that came out to CE because 3.5 had a major memory leak in reporting, so they had to do the point release. 4.0.0 is similar in that it has a common regression failure that various people have hit so i can see that they would want to get .1 out asap. If .1 was just minor other bug fixes then perhaps not.

I don't disagree at all. Whatever the case we have a scheduled release of 4.1 in October.
Until then we'll have to manage.
