Default Error looking up row in database: Illegal mix of collations

I get following error message with the database lookup step:

Error looking up row in database
Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation '='

I tried to define characterEncoding=UTF-8 in the database options, but this didn't help.
Does somebody have ideas on how to solve this? (I must not change the database table)
    Thanks!
    Best regards,
    Diethard

You are absolutely correct. I ended up converting the table, now everything is working. Thanks!
