Thread: Can Kettle import SPSS data?

  1. #1

Question Can Kettle import SPSS data?

    Hello all,

I have data generated by SPSS (or open source equivalent PSPP).
The extension is .sav and the file is binary, containing a header "$FL2@(#) SPSS DATA FILE".

Can this file be read out-of-the-box by Kettle?

This open source script reads SPSS, so it looks like Kettle could do it too: http://czep.net/data/spssread/

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Nicolas.
It seems that creating a .sav reader is not so easy!
I have the same request, but so far I always save files from SPSS as tab delimited and read them into PDI using Text File Input.
Maybe you should contact devs at PSPP and check with them if they can easily create a Java implementation of their sav reader?

    Have a look at http://jira.pentaho.com/browse/PDI-7081

    Hi.
Looking at Jira it seems that they are not working on it.
Bit of a shame, since SPSS is widely used for analysis.

I my environment SPSS is quickly replaced with R and that has a read .SAV package ... might be worth a look.
